The Bridgton Water Company was incorporated in Maine by Chapter 318 of the Acts of 1901. Winford M. Staples, Albion H. Burnham, Fred C. Knight, C.E. Gleason, and W.L. Haskett of Bridgton, and E.E. Goodwin, Willis E. Sanborn and Charles A. Bodwell of Sanford were the original corporators. The company was authorized to supply water to the residents of Bridgton. Central Maine Power Company (CMP) was founded in 1899 when Harvey D. Eaton, an attorney from Waterville, Maine, and Walter S. Wyman, an engineer, bought the Oakland Electric Company.
